Ummm, these foods are supposed to be easily digestible? :-)
Well, as my wife mentioned in her blog post, I've never really done any kind of strict diet. One of the benefits of being an endurance athlete, I suppose, is I'm free to eat anything in sight. So my big concern was how I was going to get enough calories and not feel hungry all the time on just fruits and vegetables. (Even when I'm not active, I still have an extremely high metabolism.) Well, my system seems to have solved that problem by not letting any food get through at all. That colon cleanser seems to have had the opposite of the intended effect on me. Of course, western remedies tend to affect me differently than everybody else, so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised at the weird way my system is reacting. Anyway, I just spent the last fifteen minutes throwing up all the food I've consumed over the last few hours...apparently it had to get out somehow. (As I was hunched over the toilet bowl staring at what used to be dinner, Skye had the sense of humor to say, "You don't even want to know how much those mushrooms cost.")
On the plus side, the sharp pains have subsided and yoga tomorrow no longer looms as a sadistic threat as it did while I was writhing in agony. While I'm intent on seeing this thing through, I am going to entertain myself tonight by watching South Park episode #407, where a New Age-y healer moves to South Park and dupes the town-folk into buying a bunch of detoxifying agents ;-)

Just wanted to join the gag-fest. At the risk of sounding like a total weenie, the liver tonic is, um. . .challenging me. To offer way too much information, I have to drink it over the sink, as my body tends to send it right back on up. Ugh. I never thought I had such a sensitive palate. Your post gave me the boost I needed to knock it back again this morning. Cheers!
I'll have yours! Should I be ashamed that I actually like the liver tonic?
Devin:
Wow! That's one I haven't heard here before. Did you drink the colon cleanser right before you ate? Was it your first day taking the colon cleanser? I'm asking because it is what I would consider an unusual response to the cleanser...Perhaps it is a combination of the early morning, the cleanser and some different foods? I think I'd really space out the cleanser and the food for starters and see how that goes.
And for the liver tonic lovers out there:
I like the taste but every single time we cleanse, the first time I drink the tonic I get a rocking headache that lasts the rest of the day (and usually lands me in bed). I thought for certain things would be different this time and drank the tonic, ate my lunch and went to a movie...where my head pounded and all I could think about was the sweet call of my pillow beckoning me! Makes me wonder what grossness is coming out of my liver with that first tonic!
Uh-oh . . . what if my liver tonic is rancid or something? :) Just kidding, I think. (What does it taste like to you?)
Kooch, how do you drink it? Just in a shot of water or like tea? I want to like it, too! Or at least just get along with it.
I drink it like tea. I'm one of those that likes grassy tasting things and things that basically taste like the earth. I think "health" when I drink it, too. That seems to help.
I love the taste of the liver tonic, and the taste of the colon cleanser, actually, so I don't think it's unusual at all. I wanted to address Devin's concerns here though:
I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing some turbulence, brother Devin. It can be awfully hard to have faith in a healer/healing when their method causes seemingly unnecessary pain before it shows results. Most non-western medicines do this though: "Feel bad now, feel especially good later", instead of "Feel good right away, feel nothing later."
When a person is purging in the Native American Church ceremony, they say "Congratulations, you got well!" and treat it as an essential part of the healing. Of course, throwing up and being rewarded with the life-changing total recall of a Peyote journey is bound to create a deeper shift in oneself and ones beliefs than throwing up and watching a 2-dimensional cartoon episode that you've already seen is likely to. TV is my least favorite mind-altering substance though, so I'll admit I am highly biased in that opinion.
Unfortunately, the colon cleanser is not designed to provide psychedelic insight into our healing process, and so we have to focus intensely to provide the insight ourselves...sigh... anyway, if you're wondering why the colon cleanser is having trouble doing its job, you might want to review the statement "I'm free to eat anything in sight" in relation to your pre-cleanse weening week, and previous weeks. It is unlikely that the ingredients in the cleanser are getting stuck by themselves, much more likely that they are getting stuck on something that was already there. Certain foods, processed meats in particular, are known to stay in the human digestive tract for exceedingly long periods of time. Impacted into the colon wall by other more digestible foods moving through, these "aged" meats can put up quite a fight against cleansing powders, colonics, stomach massage, even fasting. Perhaps I'm not telling you anything you don't already know, or you haven't eaten anything suspect in recent weeks, this is just what came to mind for me when I read your post. If there is chance that such is the case though, I'd stick with the treatment a little longer before suspecting that a New Age scam is afoot, perhaps even supplementing with some other proven "New" Age techniques such as a colonic (discovered by the ancient Taoists, who got the idea from watching herons use their long beaks to perform it on themselves), or an abdominal massage (also the Taoists, as well as the Mayans, probably every other culture where children had stomachs and mothers hand hands). If all else fails, there's always Grandfather Peyote to kick it out. And he does kick.
I wish you all the luck in the world, with whatever needs to be released for this cleanse to be worth your dollar and while.
Um, I actually said all that, if y'all couldn't have guessed. It seems my roommate was logged onto blogger.com and so it identified me as him when I posted the comment. Just for the sake of general straight-up-ness, accountability and what-not.
The colon cleanser.. i can tolerate.. reminds me of black licorice.. ...
the liver tonic i agree is horrrrible. I can take it down but its a rough experience.
I realized if you take it like a shot and chase with some apple juice it helps...( a spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down ).
Hi Devin,
My system is also a little sensitive to the colon cleanser, but I find drinking more apple juice or water helps. Anyway, its not like the colon cleanser is something radical, its just fiber. Of course, most of us don't get as much fiber as we should, so adding this much is, not surprisingly, a bit of a shock to the system.
I also am an endurance athlete and I don't think you need to worry to much about getting enough calories. I was on the precleanse diet last week. This weekend I did a 60 mile mountain bike race without any impact.
Nonetheless, this week I plan to lighten my activity load a little to accommodate the change in diet. I am sure I could eat enough calories on the cleanse diet, but I don't see any reason to tax my body when the whole point of the week is to give your body a break.
