Smoking cessation

I'm writing this blog in the hope of helping others who may have decided to quit smoking during the cleanse. Many of you don't know that I have been a smoker for 21 years. Just the thought of never smoking again sends me into a panic. My rational mind tells me that smoking is a terrible habit and will eventually kill me. My Father died at the age of 57. I know that smoking contributed to his death. My irrational mind says that I just cannot do without that daily dose of nicotine.
The hardest time for me is in the morning. I really look forward to smoking that first cigarette. During the cleanse I will allow myself that first cigarette. I will do my yoga practice in the morning and then go home and take a nice long bath. After my bath I plan on slapping on the nicotine patch. My goal is not to stop smoking all together during this week. I think it is more realistic to plan on decreasing my smoking. I can deal with that thought. I cannot deal with the thought of never being able to smoke again. My hope is that I will continue to decrease the amount I smoke until I no longer need to have that morning cigarette.
I hope this helps.
Julie

Many have said that cigarettes are the most difficult of all addictions to kick. Anyone who makes the effort is certainly to be applauded. Julie, may the power of the cleanse and the kula and the force be with you. Steve

Wow Julie - I'm impressed. What a great way to start the cleanse. When you feel a lack of willpower, remember that we are behind you!

Go Julie! What a great bodhisattva you are for diving right in like this and sharing something so challenging for you. You're teaching all of us that doing so doesn't bring shame, but support, strength and love from the kula! Keep us posted, rain or shine, we promise to love you no matter what!

I am, however, hoping you can find some organic nicotine patches at Whole Foods... ;)

Love,
G

As a former smoker (who was highly addicted to the cigarette after a long work day or pre-dinner), the addiction has never fully left me but I am able to blow off (no pun intended) the craving whenever it strikes. It has taken years and I have never regretted making the effort. During meditation, I will commit several breaths to taking away any craving or suffering you are feeling and sending you the peaceful strength to let this go when you are ready.

Julie, I was a smoker for many years. It took me several tries to finally quit. I remember the FEAR involved in quiting. It's real! I will be here for you!

Thanks to everyone for your support. I will need it next week. I have no expectations. I just want to try something different. I'm open to any suggestions you may have. Many thanks to Will for his suggestion today!
